400,000 additional lives will be saved by advances in cancer research
Experts have predicted that advances in cancer research and improvements in treatment will save an extra 400,000 lives over the next 20 years.
According to Cancer Research UK, latest figures reveal that for every 100,000 people in the UK, 331 died from cancer in 2014, and by 2034 this number will drop to 280 for every 100,000 people.
However, the charity have warned that the numbers may not improve for some cancers that are harder to treat, such as pancreatic cancer and brain tumours.
Cancer Research UK’s chief executive Sir Harpal Kumar, said “We’re resolute that, by 2034, three in four people will survive their cancer for at least ten years. This will mean making more progress in breast, bowel and blood cancers, but also accelerating our effort in those cancers which are currently hard to treat.”
