A boost in funding for the Troubled Families Programme
On 5th January 2020 the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government announced its plans to invest up to £165 million into its esteemed Trouble Families Programme.
The current programme was rolled out in England in April 2015 and replaced the first programme which had been in place since 2012. The scheme aims to provide assistance to those families facing a vast array of interconnected issues such as domestic abuse, unemployment, mental health issues and school attendance. The concept behind the programme is to have ‘Troubled Families’ keyworkers to provide support to whole families rather than individuals in an attempt to prevent the development of the aforementioned societal problems.
In the last 19 to 24 months the programme has already been hugely successful, and in comparison with those families who haven’t received the support, numbers of children going into care, adults going to prison, juvenile convictions and those seeking benefits and Jobseeker’s allowance have reduced significantly.
The announcement has certainly had a positive reception within the world of family law and it is thought that increased funding will have even more of an impact on tackling widespread issues such as domestic violence.
