CAFCASS Experience a Rising Number of New Private Law Cases
CAFCASS, the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service have published new figures which state that compared with last January, numbers of new private law family cases have increased by 16%.
A staggering 4,118 cases were received by CAFCASS concerning a total of 6,064 children in the month of January 2020. Upon reviewing the figures from April 2019, these indicate that there has been an increase of around 6.3% since the period of April 2018 to January 2019.
What does this mean in practice? The increase in numbers of cases referred to CAFCASS is a surprisingly positive movement within family law. Although there may have been a rise in the number of cases involving safeguarding issues, it is positive that action is being taken to address this in order that disputes in relation to children matters are resolved effectively and quickly.
CAFCASS are independent of the courts, social services, education and health authorities and ensure that children’s needs, wishes and feelings are put first, making sure that children’s voices are heard, and that decisions are made in their best interests.
