CQC finds one in five cosmetic surgery clinics are unsafe and put clients at risk
A report by the Care Quality Commission has found that a fifth of private practices put clients at risk, with procedures often performed by untrained staff who do not follow infection prevention standards.
Many clinics were found to be poor at monitoring vulnerable patients whose health may deteriorate and who did not give proper consent before starting treatment.
Other repeated areas of concern included a lack of attention to fundamental safety processes and an inability to manage anaphylaxis, a deadly allergic reaction. Concerns were also raised about maintenance at some clinics and equipment cleanliness.
Enforcement action was taken against 12 of the 58 clinics inspected, meaning the surgeries must make fundamental changes to their practices or face the risk of being closed down.
Professor Ted Baker, chief inspection of hospitals at the CQC, has written to the clinics and warned them that if their standards are not improved, they face being short down, adding “Where we have concerns about the quality and safety of services, we will use our enforcement powers to demand improvements and, in the case of very significant concerns, to suspend or cancel a provider’s registration in order to protect people receiving care.”
