Giving antibiotics to babies and toddlers increases risk of diabetes
Doctors have warned that giving young children antibiotics could substantially increase their risk of becoming diabetic.
Researchers from New York University have conducted trials on young mice and compared those which were given several courses of antibiotics with mice that were not given drugs. Those that had received three treatments by the age of six weeks, which equates to around two and a half years of age in human terms, had their chances of developing diabetes increased by 50%.
The scientists conducted the study at a time when prescription rates for antibiotics are rising, in order to attempt to determine whether the drugs were linked with the increase in type 1 diabetes.
