New NHS 10-year prevention and early detection plan ‘could save 500,000 lives’
The long-term plan, which was unveiled by Simon Stevens, chief executive of NHS England, and Teresa May, is committed to providing a third of the extra funding being provided to the NHS over the next four years to GPs, community care and mental health, the intention being to shift the focus away from hospitals.
However, unions have warned that shortages in staff could scupper the plans, with one in eleven posts currently vacant.
In addition, some senior doctors have voiced their concerns that hospitals are facing a ‘near-on impossible task’. Dr Nick Scriven, president of the Society of Acute Medicine, has said he is ‘staggered’ by the plans.
It has recently been reported that a significant number of trusts in England are missing all three key waiting time targets for cancer care, A&E and routine operations.
Mr Stevens has hinted of changes to the current targets to take into account clinical need. He said “The problem with that is it doesn’t distinguish between turning up at A&E with a sprained finger versus turning up with a heart attack.
“The top doctors in the NHS are looking at what are the most appropriate clinical standards to improve outcomes in emergency care. They will make their recommendations and then, on the back of that, we will meet them.”
