New trust to manage renamed Stafford Hospital
Stafford Hospital and City General Hospital in Stoke are to be run by a new trust.
University Hospitals of North Staffordshire NHS Trust will be renamed University Hospitals of North Midlands, and the trust will manage both hospitals.
Stafford Hospital, which was the target of a £6m public enquiry into care failings, will be renamed County Hospital, and City General Hospital will be renamed Royal Stoke University Hospital.
The trust which ran Stafford, Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust, will be dissolved next month, and the new trust will begin on 1st November.
It is anticipated that the cost of the changes will be “well over £300m”. The chief executive-designate of the new trust, Mark Hackett, said that the figures were “considerably more” than at first expected.
He said “What’s clear to us is the current A&E department (at Stafford) is overcrowded and we need to be putting more staff and facilities in, to deliver world-class care. We are determined to do that.”
He went on to say “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to rejuvenate our hospitals. The people of Stafford have faced uncertainty for too long.”
New facilities being brought in for Stafford include a new frail-elderly assessment unit, the opening and refurbishing of more wards and operating theatres, and a refurbished midwife-led maternity unit.
At Stoke there will be 12 additional beds in the new critical care unit, a new orthopaedic centre with 56 new beds, a new 28-bed children’s ward and an additional 64 beds across a number of wards.
