NHS staff survey reveals over a quarter of hospitals are not doing enough to learn from serious mistakes
The survey of nearly 300,000 NHS staff also revealed that nurses and doctors are being harassed and bullied if they raise concerns. This is despite a repeated promise by ministers to overhaul the secrecy culture within the NHS and make it easier for whistleblowers to speak up.
Concerns raised included feeling that patient care was not the hospital’s top priority and that managers were more obsessed with cutting costs and meeting targets, not being encouraged to report mistakes, and not feeling secure about raising concerns about unsafe care of patients.
Former chief executive of United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust Gary Walker, who was sacked after raising concerns about the numbers of patients dying, said “Nothing practical has been done to make it safe for staff to raise concerns without fear of reprisal.
“Health secretary Jeremy Hunt promised to re-employ sacked whistleblowers and not one has been.
“This culture is unsafe for staff and patients and it’s time Jeremy Hunt kept his promises.”
