Patient time and NHS money could be saved by hard-and-fast prostate treatment
Experts from the Institute of Cancer Research and the Royal Marsden Hospital have said that less but stronger doses of radiotherapy treatment for prostate cancer could save the NHS money and patients’ time.
The study was funded partly by Cancer Research UK and the Department of Health.
The experts also said that they had obtained proof that this method of treatment was as effective as traditional dosage without causing more side effects.
The new treatment regime would mean an average of 17 fewer hospital appointments for each patient and nationally it would mean 150,000 less visits each year, which could save the NHS tens of millions of pounds.
Professor David Dearnaley from the Institute of Cancer Research said “There are no losers with this. Everybody wins – the NHS and patients.”
Cancer Research UK’s Professor Arnie Purushotham, said “It is clear that this is safe and effective, so it is now up to the NHS to ensure all men who are suitable are offered this treatment immediately.
