Researchers predict Australia ‘to be first to eliminate’ cervical cancer
Researchers have predicted that, if current screening and vaccination rates are maintained, Australia will be the first country in the world to eliminate cervical cancer, and the disease could be eliminated as a public health issue within the next 20 years.
The progress has been attributed by scientists to national prevention programmes and the disease is predicted to be classified as a ‘rare cancer’ within the country by the year 2022, by which time the rates are projected to drop to less than six cases per 100,000 people.
Furthermore, the researchers have also suggested that by the year 2035, annual cases in Australia could drop to four in 100,000 people, which is a potential elimination threshold.
Cancer Council NSW researcher Dr Megan Smith, recently said “Regardless of what the (elimination) threshold is, it is likely Australia would be the first country to reach it given our current low rate of cervical cancer, and our strong prevention programmes.”
Last year the country replaced its routine standards for cancer screening with more sensitive HPV cervical screening tests.
The World Health Organisation estimates that currently around 90 per cent of deaths from the disease happen in low and middle income countries.
