Wales sees slowdown in cancer survival improvement rates
According to new analysis by cancer experts, Wales has seen a slowdown in cancer survival improvement, and the gap in survival rates for lung and breast cancers is widening between richer and poorer parts of the country.
According to the Welsh Cancer Intelligence and Surveillance Unit (WCISU), a range of wider social and economic factors were likely to affect life expectancy amongst sufferers, adding that the reasons were complex and needed further detailed investigations.
Public Health Wales’ Dr Dyfed Wyn Huws, said survival rates were continuing to increase, but that the improvement trend had slowed slightly.
He said “The most recent gains we’ve seen in cancer survival have not been sustained at the same rate as we have seen in the past.
“In Wales, and the UK more widely, our report shows that five-year cancer survival in the most disadvantaged communities in Wales is only three-quarters of that in least disadvantaged, with little recent improvement in inequality.”
Macmillan Cancer Support Wales’ head of services Richard Pugh, said the gap in five-year survival rates for people in the most disadvantaged communities when compared with those in the wealthiest areas was “unacceptable”.
He added “Welsh Government must go further to better understand why this gap exists and what can be done to close it.”
