Alternatives to Christmas Parties Suggested

Recent research carried out has concluded that nearly half of all small to medium sized employers are not planning to have a Christmas party this year. Unsurprisingly, nearly all of those declining such activities have blamed the recession and tough trading conditions for the decision.

Nine out of ten employers stated that they would not spend more than they did last year on Christmas, although two thirds appreciated that staff morale could be damaged by cancelling parties.

As an alternative, some suggestions have been given which do not carry a particularly high cost but which may still reward and motivate staff, and maintain good morale. Increased flexible working before the festive period, relaxed dress codes or even setting time aside for activities such as a festive quiz are some options open to an employer.

Of course, those businesses who still choose to hold a Christmas party should be aware of the risks and pitfalls of such activities, particularly when the offer of a “free bar” is included!
