Hospital consultants urged to stay united
At a recent BMA consultants conference, committee chair Paul Flynn urged consultants to focus against the ‘very real’ threat of unfavourable changes to their working lives and contracts.
Dr Flynn added that he still thought that a successful negotiation on a national contract would bring about the best outcome.
Dr Flynn said “Negotiations stalled in October when we could not accept a heads of agreement that did not provide adequate contractual protection against excessive workload and burnout.
“Let me make this clear – if the government wants change, it will have to offer us something in return.
“Consultants are not superhuman, we deserve time to rest and time with our families; patients not only understand this, they want it – how many here would like to be treated by an exhausted consultant?”
He also pointed out other issues, including the outpouring of emergency admissions across hospitals in January, made worse by an ‘inadequate NHS 111 service’.
He added “Consultants have been at the heart of the crisis, providing the leadership and initiative needed to find solutions to help keep their services running.
“Workloads are rising, often bordering on unmanageable, consultants are left to deal with the frontline reality of rising patient demand and chronic under-resourcing, in high-pressured and stressful working environments.”
