Investigation into senior executive at NHS England to be reviewed
The General Medical Council is to review a case against NHS manager Dame Barbara Hakin, who has faced claims of instructing a hospital trust to meet performance targets at whatever cost, thereby endangering patients, during the period that she was head of the East Midlands Strategic Health Authority.
After an investigation into the matter in 2013, Dame Barbara was cleared by the GMC, but that investigation is now to be reviewed.
Allegations of endangering patient safety and bullying of staff were rife during the time of Dame Barbara’s running of the East Midlands authority, in particular in relation to the treatment of Gary Walker, former chief executive of United Lincolnshire Hospitals. Mr Walker lost his job after he was told that, despite his concerns over patient safety, hospital waiting time targets had to be met.
A spokesperson from the General Medical Council, said “We don’t comment in detail on individual doctors. But we can confirm that Dame Barbara Hakin is not under investigation by the GMC. We are, however, reviewing a decision made as part of our original investigation. This process, known as Rule 12, enables the GMC in certain circumstances to review a decision previously made.”
