NHS waiting lists highest in seven years
Figures from NHS England show that the number of patients currently waiting for routine operations and procedures stands at 3.12 million, although as not all trusts report information, the true figure is estimated to be almost 3.4 million.
These figures include over 6,100 patients who have been waiting for over a year for treatment or operations.
Separate data obtained from hospitals under the Freedom of Information Act shows that in some instances the delay in treatment for some patients has approached three years.
Many patients are the elderly waiting for hip replacements and who are now immobile and unable to leave their home without the assistance of carers or relatives.
Joyce Robins of Patient Concern, said “It’s beginning to look like managers are hoping patients will just die before they are ready for them.”
Katherine Murphy of The Patients Association, said “These stark statistics of patients on hospital waiting lists show that the challenge facing the NHS is even more serious than anyone could imagine.”
A spokesman for NHS England, said “In the face of ever-growing demand, we continue to make strides in cutting long waits.”
