Seven-day contract offered to GPs
David Cameron has announced at the Conservative Party’s annual conference that GPs throughout England will be offered a voluntary contract to provide a service for patients seven days a week.
He also announced that seven-day services throughout hospitals will be extended to “half the country” by 2018 and to the whole of England by 2020.
At a recent interview with the BBC, Mr Cameron said that this was “a really exciting prospect”.
He added “We said that we are going to have to make difficult decisions elsewhere, but the NHS will not just be protected.
“It’s getting an extra £10bn of money during this Parliament, over and above inflation, and that enables us to meet some really clear goals.
“Parents and people in our country want to access the NHS on a seven-day basis.
“Let me be clear, this doesn’t mean that all staff in the NHS have to work every seven days, it just means the services are available.
“So, I can announce today that we will be publishing a new GP contract to get rid of the box-ticking and the form-filling.”
The new GP contract will be voluntary, and doctors will be free to decide whether to link-up with other local GPs to form practice networks. They will also be able to work closely with hospital specialists, pharmacists, community nurses and other health care professionals.
However, the Royal College of GPs has warned that the current recruitment crisis makes seven-day working plans “unrealistic”, that the plans are unachievable in this Parliament and that they risk destabilising care.
