Uprise in cancelled NHS operations in England
In the first three months of this year, over 20,000 NHS operations were cancelled at the last minute, the highest proportion in the last two years (one in every 100).
Although an alternative date or private treatment should be offered within 28 days, the number of patients not being seen is the highest in ten years.
Out of 1.9 million operations, 20,464 were cancelled between January and March 2015, which compared with 17,868 at the same time the previous year.
NHS England have said that, with the current “unprecedented” demand on the health service, the number of cancellations was low.
A spokesman from NHS England has said “Cancellations should be avoided wherever possible as we recognise the concerns that patients face when this happens.
“However, the level of cancellations in this quarter has remained low in the context of the millions of operations performed in the NHS each year, and the unprecedented level of demand we have seen across the whole health service this winter.”
