New five-minute Phesgo breast cancer treatment rolled out across NHS
The newly-approved remedy combines two treatments into a single injection, reducing the time needed to administer it by around two and a half hours.
The Phesgo treatment combines two drugs, pertuzumab and trastuzumab, which are usually given separately as two intravenous infusions into a single injection in the thigh.
Peter Johnson, NHS clinical director for cancer, said the treatment would be offered to patients with HER2-positive breast cancer across the country, which will result in around 15% of all breast cancer patients being offered the remedy, either alongside chemotherapy or by itself.
Mr Johnson added that the NHS had “continued to adopt new treatments rapidly throughout the pandemic to improve cancer care for patients” and Phesgo was “the latest in a series of changes which have meant the NHS has been able to deliver vital cancer treatment while keeping patients safe from Covid.”
