Drop in life expectancy rates amongst women living in poorest areas of England
Data released by the Office of National Statistics has revealed that life expectancy for women living in England’s most deprived areas has fallen by 100 days in recent years, whilst in the least deprived areas it has increased by 84 days.
The gap has also widened for men, albeit less markedly.
The data reveals that life expectancy for women in the poorest areas in England on average live for 78.7 years, whilst women in the richest areas can expect to live for 86.2 years – a gap of 7.5 years.
In the case of men, the gap is nearly a decade, 74 years in poorer areas and 83.3 years in richer ones.
The Health Foundation think tank’s Tim Elwell-Sutton, said the data revealed a “staggering level of variation in the years of life you can expect to live in good health in England and Wales depending on your social and economic circumstances.
“To reduce these stark inequalities, cross-government action and investment is needed on the wider determinants that influence our health.
“This includes access to adequate money and resources, affordable healthy food, well-designed transport systems, and good quality housing, work and education.”
