Leeds hospital one of first in region to offer quicker and more targeted tests for prostate cancer
A Leeds private hospital has become one of the first in the region to offer a prostate cancer test which is so targeted it can detect cases other tests might miss.
The new ultrasound equipment is also performed under local anaesthetic rather than general anaesthetic, enabling patients to attend as a day patient instead of having to stay overnight in hospital.
Prostate cancer has now overtaken breast cancer to be the most commonly diagnosed in the UK. Currently one in eight men will be affected in their lifetime and the numbers are rising, with over 47,500 men diagnosed with the condition every year, an average of 129 each day.
The TP biopsy test, which is now being offered at Spire Hospital, Leeds, involves an ultrasound-guided needle biopsy that searches for cancer cells in the prostate and takes samples, which are later examined under a microscope. The procedure from start to finish is approximately an hour and 20 minutes.
