Scientists have discovered possible breakthrough over potentially harmful chemicals
According to new research, chemists have identified how to destroy “forever chemicals” in a low-cost way for the first time.
Scientists have linked exposure to the PFAS substances, at certain levels to serious health risks, including birth defects and cancer.
The resistance of the chemicals to oil, water and stains makes them highly useful and they are used in hundreds of everyday objects from make-up to frying pans.
Research is ongoing into determining how different levels of exposure can lead to various health effects.
Elsie Sunderland, professor of environmental chemistry at Harvard University, said “There is an association between exposure and adverse outcomes in every major organ system in the human body.”
Current methods to destroy PFAS, such as incineration, have not been successful, and can be prohibitively expensive or have been associated with local contamination.
The new research claims to have done the “seemingly impossible” and destroyed PFAS using cheap products and low temperature, which could be very useful in helping communities suffering from high level contamination.
