Neil Wilson on Working Hours Podcast: Why local connections are key to building reputation and relevance
Our Managing Partner, Neil Wilson recently featured on an episode of Working Hours Podcast, where he delved into the topic of ‘Work is Playing by the Rules’.
Neil discussed his unconventional career path, having transitioned into the world of law aged 33 when he qualified as a solicitor, and journey to becoming a leader through resilience and adapting to change.
In this blog, we share the key takeaways from the episode – from challenging conventional career narratives to growing a sustainable legal firm. Read on to find out more.
Successful transitions later in life are possible with persistence and focus
Neil discussed his unconventional path, having worked in government management for 14 years before deciding to qualify as a solicitor. His journey into law began after completing his law degree (LLB) in 1996 and qualifying as a solicitor in 1998, studying part-time on evenings and weekends while holding down his non-legal job.
Neil had no prior contacts in the legal profession, but with determination he worked his way up to Managing Partner in 2014. Since taking the role, Neil has been overseeing our 210 employees across eight offices in West Yorkshire, demonstrating how a successful career transition is possible later in life through persistence and hard work.
A progressive work culture supports both staff and service quality
As a firm, we are recognised for valuing employee wellbeing; it is embedded into our workplace structures and day-to-day culture. Neil has played a key role in developing a clear vision and values for our firm that reflect a modern, inclusive and innovative workplace.
The significant shift to a progressive culture has contributed to the firm being named as one of the Sunday Times’ Best Places to Work in 2024. Neil spoke about the importance of balancing employee autonomy with professional standards – striving for practices that support wellbeing while maintaining excellent client service.
Local connections fuel both reputation and relevance
The firm has deep roots in West Yorkshire and is dedicated to working with local businesses. Trusted by prominent local organisations including Leeds Rhinos and Huddersfield Town Football Club, the firm has developed a reputation as a community institution, becoming the legal partner to many local sports clubs and other organisations.
These connections are paired with niche expertise which makes the firm stand out as a leading local provider. Neil explains how the firm can cater to sports clients with complex employment and contractual needs, thanks to its specialist sports law expertise.
Leadership is developed through resilience and continuous learning
Neil emphasised that leadership is not tied to early achievement – but rather developed through resilience, continuous learning, and adapting to change.
As Managing Partner, he highlighted the challenges and strategies of growing a medium-sized law firm sustainably – from consistently delivering quality across multiple offices to maintaining firm culture – with a focus on structure.
