Apprenticeships for those with learning difficulties to be created
The Government has recently announced that a new task force is to be created by the Department for Work and Pensions, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and the Department for Education, to create apprenticeship opportunities for those with learning difficulties. The announcement is part of the government’s aim to create 3 million more apprenticeships by 2020.
The task force is due to meet in May and June 2016 to identify issues and then investigate solutions. Recommendations will be made to minsters on the way forward. The task force is headed by Paul Maynard MP and also includes employers, training providers, charities and experts in education.
Worryingly, only 6% of individuals with learning disabilities are employed. The task force aims to create opportunities and increase access for those with learning difficulties to apprenticeships and training. These individuals will need to be supported into work and the task force aims to do this.
The Minister for Disabled People, Justin Tomlinson stated “apprenticeships offer fantastic opportunities for individuals to learn whilst they earn, developing the skills and knowledge they need to progress their careers in a wide variety of occupations and at a range of levels”.
