Preeclampsia linked as risk factor for cerebral palsy
Investigators at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology are asking medical staff to watch for early signs of an unusually small baby developing in a mother with preeclampsia. This condition is identified through high blood pressure and protein in the mother’s urine. Through research undertaken at the university, it was determined that smaller-than-average babies that were also either relatively premature (between 32 and 36 weeks), or significantly premature (less than 31 weeks) born to a mother with preeclampsia are at an extremely increased risk (20 fold) of being diagnosed with cerebral palsy.
Amongst babies born at full-term, those who were of a normal size and born to a mother with preeclampsia did not seem to be at an increased risk. Babies born at full term but small for their gestational age to a mother with preeclampsia were at a 3 fold risk, according to the study.
Preeclampsia is a condition which presents itself through large amounts of protein in the mother’s urine and raised blood pressure.
