Gin on the ROKTS
Business for Calderdale’s September meeting took place at Rokt climbing centre in Brighouse. Located in the building of the former Sugdens’ flour mill, BfC members were welcomed by director Euan Noble, who gave a tour of the centre as well as explaining about the impacts of the Boxing Day floods. The climbing centre is now one of the largest in the country.
The meeting then transferred over the road to the Millers’ Bar. There Euan introduced members to his latest concept, in conjunction with one of his co-Directors Andy Whiting, pHure Liquor. As chemists, the directors have established a micro-distillery for gin and vodka. The liquors are scientifically distilled in small batches at pressure to best retain the botanical flavours and fragrances. The Millers’ Bar also laid on food for members.
Chair of BfC, Nick Worsnop, of Chadwick Lawrence solicitors, said “This was a fantastic event. It was obviously made all the better by having a sample of Euan’s pHure gin, but the regeneration and development that Euan and his partners have given to the old Sugden’s mill and what is now the Millers’ Bar is great to see. Phure have also agreed to donate £5 from each bottle of gin sold to the Watermark campaign which provides a fund for any future flood disasters in Calderdale.”
The chair also handed out the BfC monthly awards, held in conjunction with the Courier, to Wim Batist of BCA Group for April, Robert MacDougall of Polyframe, Halifax for June, and Eureka! Children’s museum for July. Each of these winners received their respective awards as a result of their respective achievements as reported in the Courier in those months. The monthly winners will go forward to an overall winner which will be presented at the Courier’s Business Awards in October.
BfC’s next event is on 11th October at ABS UK in Elland. On 24th November, the forum is holding a dinner at Berties where the guest speaker will be Mark Lawrenson, presenter of Match of the Day. For details of how to join and for tickets please visit www.businessforcalderdale.co.uk
