Yorkshire hospital’s new surgery unit aims to reduce waiting times
A new £10m day surgery unit aimed to reduce waiting times has opened in East Yorkshire.
The facility at Castle Hill Hospital in Cottingham includes ten operating theatres for procedures ranging from neurosurgery to facial operations, and consultants said they hope to carry out at least 80 operations a day.
Dave Wright, consultant anaesthetist at Hull University Teaching Hospitals Trust, said the facility was “more than doubling existing capacity”.
“I think it’s really exciting for Hull to be at the forefront of building a large centre.
“Day surgeries that are on this scale are really quite uncommon, so it would be excellent for us to be able to provide that service to our local patients.
“I think when it’s fully up to speed, it’ll have a significant impact on tackling the surgical backlog.”
Emergency and acute surgery will still be carried out in the main hospital theatres at Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill, but the unit will offer to carry out small operations such as ear, nose and throat procedures, as well as more complex treatment including spinal surgery, laser surgery and joint replacements.
