England’s biggest NHS trust placed in special measures
A damning report by the Care Quality Commission has led to Barts Health NHS Trust being put into special measures.
The health service regulator found a culture of low morale and bullying among staff at Whipps Cross Hospital, with patient safety issues also being raised.
The Trust has responded by saying that it was committed to securing the welfare and safety of “every one of its patients”. But Prof Sir Mike Richards, chief inspector of hospitals, said that the trust must “get a grip on what is happening”.
The CQC report highlighted a number of crucial concerns, which included a persistent culture of bullying and harassment, an inability to meet targets for waiting times, insufficient levels of staffing needed to provide safe patient care, and bed occupancy that is too high.
The hospital will imminently strengthen its leadership team, appointing a dedicated managing director and director of nursing, and a medical director to manage the day to day running of the hospital.
Peter Morris, Trust chief executive, said “We are very sorry for the failings identified by the CQC in some of our services at Whipps Cross and we know the Trust has a big challenge ahead.
“Much has been done but we recognise that more needs to be done. We will take all the necessary steps to raise quality standards at Whipps Cross.”
