Thirteenth patient dies from Essex strep A outbreak
Mid Essex Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has said two new cases of the invasive Group A Streptococcus (iGAS) bacterium have been found in the West Essex CCG area and have been linked to the recent outbreak.
They added that one of the recently diagnosed patients has since died.
The infection was found in the Braintree area, and further cases have also been found in Maldon and Chelmsford. Those infected were older people, most of whom were receiving treatment for wounds and some were in care homes.
There have so far been 31 confirmed cases, including the 13 deaths, and a further four possible cases.
Mid Essex CCG have said that an incident management team was working diligently with West Essex CCG to control the outbreak, adding that Public Health England would be providing advice on control measures to be implemented.
Public Health England have said that they are carrying out a full and thorough investigation into the outbreak.
