East of England Ambulance Service on brink of declaring major incident
The East of England Ambulance Service (EEAS) has declared it is on the brink of a major incident following ‘lengthy’ hospital handover delays.
The service covers Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Suffolk, Norfolk, Bedfordshire and Essex.
The service has also received a significant increase in 999 emergency calls and said it had moved to “major incident standby” on Saturday evening “to better direct our resources”.
A spokesperson added “We experienced increased pressure across the Eastern region over the weekend”.
Since July, the service has operated under the highest of the four escalation levels used by ambulance services, ranging from level one, meaning “steady state”, through to moderate, severe and lastly extreme pressure.
