Over 700 surgeries could close in the next five years:
The Royal College of General Practitioners have revealed that over 2.5 million patients throughout England could see their GP surgeries close by the end of the year 2023.
The college claims that currently there are 762 practices across the UK that are at risk of closing, mostly due to the fact that at least 75 per cent of doctors are aged 55 or over and approaching retirement.
They say that so many closures could have a ‘catastrophic’ effect on the NHS, meaning longer appointment waiting times, an increase in workloads and more people attending at A&E for minor illnesses.
The estimates predicted that only around a quarter of regions in England have no risk of closure of practices.
Campaigners have called for ‘drastic action’ to encourage new GPs to join the profession, warning that the potential future closures would be ‘dangerous’ for patients.
