‘Better patient safety regulation’ needed for private hospitals
Following on from the case of Ian Paterson, the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) has called for an overhaul in the way private hospitals are regulated.
Mr Paterson was recently found guilty of unlawfully wounding patients during breast operations at private hospitals in the West Midlands.
Surgical leaders have since voiced their concerns about patient safety information availability in private hospitals and called for a stronger focus on safety initiatives to bring them in line with hospitals in the NHS.
The RCS are urging the next government to ensure private hospitals are called to report on serious injuries and unexpected deaths in the same way as NHS hospitals.
It also reiterated its appeal for improved regulation of cosmetic surgery, which is commonly carried out in private clinics.
Clare Marx, president of the RCS, said “Ian Paterson wilfully abused the trust placed in him by patients at their most vulnerable.
“His actions and behaviour were appalling, and we must do everything in our power to prevent such a violation being repeated.”
