Campaign for all mothers to be screened for Group B Strep
Campaigners are asking for all expectant mothers to be screened for the Group B Strep bacteria in an attempt to save lives and prevent babies being left with disabilities.
Early Onset Group B Strep is a bacteria which can be carried by pregnant mothers and passed to their babies. In the majority of cases it is harmless, but it can go on to cause pneumonia, sepsis and meningitis in the early days of a baby’s life.
The British Paediatric Surveillance Unit reported that in the 12 months to April 2015, 518 babies were born with the infection in the UK, dozens were left with disabilities and 27 died. In most cases babies can be protected from the infection if the mother is given antibiotics during labour.
Charity Group B Strep Support has called for all mothers to be screened in the UK. However, the National Screening Committee has said that the test is not precise enough that that there is no case for it, which would mean large numbers of women taking antibiotics unnecessarily.
