Funding dispute between NHS bosses and hospitals
NHS hospitals and bosses are at loggerheads about the system for providing income to NHS hospitals in England.
Plans for next year’s payment system have been rejected by hospital chiefs, who are warning that safe care could not be guaranteed under current proposals.
A large proportion of funding for a hospital is provided from a set of tariffs which rewards the hospital for each patient treated.
A cut was proposed by NHS bosses of just below 4%, after inflation has been taken into account, as part of a savings initiative.
Targets for waiting times are already been missed for cancer, accident and emergency, and routine operations, and the NHS was already £630m overspent midway through the 2014-2015 tax year.
Chief executive of NHS Providers, Chris Hopson, said that 80% of hospitals in England were in deficit and the decision to reject the proposals had “not been taken lightly”.
He went on to say “It is a clear response from the front line that they can no longer guarantee sustainable and safe care”.
