High percentage of pregnant women have ‘dangerously’ high blood glucose
A report published by National Pregnancy in Diabetes has found that 75% of pregnant women who have diabetes have dangerously high blood glucose.
The audit, which was commissioned by the Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership, looked at nearly 3,000 pregnant women who had diabetes in England and Wales in 2014. It found that 64% of women with Type 2 and 85% with Type 1 diabetes had higher blood glucose levels than were recommended, which increases the risk of cerebral palsy, stillbirth and neonatal death.
Chief executive of Diabetes UK, Chris Askew, has said that it appeared that many women with diabetes were not receiving the support and advice they needed in terms of planning pregnancy.
Mr Askew went on to say “The NHS needs to act urgently to make sure all women with diabetes, who might become pregnant, are aware of the risks of having high blood glucose levels in early pregnancy and are supported by specialist healthcare professionals to achieve good blood glucose control.”
