New record level reached in A&E delays
NHS England has released official figures showing that Accident and Emergency performance in England hit a new low in February, for the second month in a row.
Although hospitals are required to see 95% of patients within four hours, only 87.8% were seen within this time frame during the month.
Candace Imison from the Nuffield Trust, said “Today’s figures are the vey visible symptoms of a system facing both inexorably increasing patient numbers and severe financial strain.”
Richard Barker of NHS England said the problems were partly because of a late rise in cases of flu and problems discharging patients from hospital due to an inability to access community support for vulnerable patients.
Mr Barker said “Despite these pressures, for the year as a whole more than nine out of ten patients have been admitted, treated or discharged in under four hours, while long trolley waits have halved compared with last year.”
