Nine in ten hospital wards in England ‘overcrowded’
According to analysis by the BBC, nine out of ten NHS hospital wards in England have been overcrowded this winter and unsafe for patients.
Hospitals should have a maximum of 85 per cent of beds occupied in order to minimise delays and infection risk, but the BBC analysis showed that out of 152 hospital trusts, 137 have been above that level since the beginning of December.
This internationally recognised 85 per cent occupancy level is a mark that hospitals are recommended to adhere to in order to have capacity to accommodate last minute emergencies and to help them manage the risk of infections.
Chris Hopson, NHS Providers’ chief executive, said this news was “extremely worrying.
“Above 85% and the risks start rising and once you get into the 90% it is significant. You don’t get this in other countries and it just shows the pressure hospitals are under.”
