Red Cross urges UK to tackle inequalities unearthed by Covid pandemic
A report by the Red Cross says that 75 per cent of people in the UK are concerned about the next potential pandemic and adds that major changes are needed to protect the most vulnerable from the next global emergency.
A survey undertaken on behalf of the charity found that three-quarters of people were worried about the global impact of a future health emergency such as a pandemic, 71 per cent about the impact of a personal health crisis, and 61 per cent that climate change could have an impact on their lives. 75 per cent said they felt the UK needed to address underlying inequalities exposed by Covid.
The poll offered a window of opportunity for changes to ensure the UK society was made more resilient and better able to withstand global crises.
The charity went on to say that the pandemic had exposed many inequalities within the UK. Its report contains a proposal to tackle these inequalities ahead of any future global emergency.
The charity’s chief executive Mike Adamson, said “People are worried about big-picture challenges, including the prospect of another global health emergency and climate change, and the direct impact those events could have on their lives. As we look towards recovery, we are faced with a unique opportunity to learn and build towards a more resilient future, ensuring no-one is left behind.”
