Rise in womb cancer levels – obesity ‘likely culprit’
Cancer Research UK has warned that rising obesity rates may be linked to an increase in the number of women diagnosed with womb cancer.
Latest figures show that in the 1990s, around 19 in 100,000 women in the UK were diagnosed, with the figure rising to 29 in 100,000 in 2013.
Although the scientific link between extra weight and cancer is unclear, researchers say that the hormones produced by extra fat may play a part and that more studies are needed.
The charity’s Prof Jonathan Lederman, said “It is worrying that womb cancer cases are going up so sharply.
“We don’t know all the reasons why, but we do know that about a third of cases are linked to being overweight – so it is no surprise to see the increases in womb cancer cases echo rising obesity levels.”
Although the causes of womb cancer are not clear, it is known that certain things can increase the risk, such as lack of exercise, genes and age. Experts also say that an increase in fat could produce hormones that encourage cells to replicate, which increases the chance of tumours forming.
Dr Alison Tedstone, Public Health England’s chief nutritionist, said “We know that being overweight or obese increases our risk of some cancers, which is why it’s important to keep an eye on portion sizes and cut back on calories, sugar and fat in the diet.”
