Shortage of radiologists affecting cancer care
It has emerged that a shortage of senior radiologists throughout the UK is resulting in patient delays, affecting cancer and other medical care.
Figures suggest that although radiologists’ workload has increased by 30 per cent in the five years from 2012 to 2017, the number of consultant radiologists has gone up in that time by just 15 per cent.
President of the Royal College of Radiologists, Dr Nicola Strickland, said “I can’t overestimate how worrying it is.
“I do really feel the entire service will collapse if something isn’t done about training more radiologists in the UK to fill all the vacant consultant posts, so we have to get imaging properly staffed – and right – and enough radiologists trained to make up this deficit.”
The College have stressed that more trainees are needed, with extra funding required and an “extra effort” to retain staff.
A spokesperson from the Department of Health and Social Care said “We want to see numbers continue to rise and over the next three years we are also putting in place more training for doctors to specialise in clinical radiology.”
