Target for life-threatening 999 calls missed for 12 months
Data released by NHS England has shown that targets for life-or-death 999 calls have been missed by ambulances for a year.
Calls categorized as Red 1 (patients who are not breathing or suffering from a cardiac arrest) are meant to be responded to by ambulance crews within eight minutes, but the data has shown that the target of 75% has been missed for the twelfth month in a row.
Further to this, the Red 2 call target for strokes and other life-threatening cases, has not been reached since January 2014.
NHS England has cited the rising number of 999 calls as being the cause of the problem. There were approaching 11m calls made in the last year, which is an increase on the previous year of 7%.
Targets in other areas have also been missed for the same period, such as cancer care, A&E and routine operations, and hospital discharge delays are also at record levels.
NHS England’s Matthew Swindells, said the figures highlighted that the front line was under “intense pressure” but went on to say that performance had improved on the previous month. He added that having access to council-run social care services was a critical issue in addressing discharge delays.
