Targeted hand rehabilitation therapy offers hope to cerebral palsy patients
Researchers in Germany have developed a therapy which focusses on manging and controlling involuntary hand movements, which may help some patients with a type of cerebral palsy where only one side of the body is affected.
Up to 36 per cent of children with cerebral palsy have unilateral spastic cerebral palsy, which results in impaired movements in one side of the body, also known as ‘mirror movements’.
The therapy involved the use of both hands, emphasising controlled independent movements to manage the activities of daily living. Children involved in the study were trained to control mirror movements to achieve the necessary movements to complete the activity performed.
The researchers wrote “The ultimate goal was to increase the ability of the paretic hand (partially paralysed hand) to assist the non-paretic hand during bimanual activities.”
Significant improvements were reported in these activities. Furthermore, the positive changes were sustained and even improved during six months of follow-up after the therapy.
“The major finding of our study was that our approach of targeted bimanual therapy of children with USCP and mirror movement achieved a significant and long lasting performance of bimanual performance.”
