Teenage to become one of UK’s first NHS proton-beam therapy patients
The teenager will start the therapy at a new £125m treatment centre at the Christie Hospital in Manchester.
The specialist radiotherapy targets cancer cells without damaging tissues surrounding the tumours and until now, most NHS patients needed to travel abroad to have the treatment.
The Christie Cancer Centre first opened its doors to patients in August last year. A second centre is due to open at University College Hospital in London, offering the therapy from next year.
It is expected that each centre will have the capacity to treat up to 750 patients every year.
Although low-energy proton therapy specifically for eye tumours has been available at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in Merseyside, the two new centres are the first to have the capacity to deliver high doses to a range of cancers, including sarcoma, head and neck, and brain cancers.
Both centres will also undertake research to assess proton-beam therapy’s suitability to treat other cancers.
