UK’s first cancer-treating Proton Beam Therapy machine arrives at Newport clinic
Proton beam therapy is a highly targeted form of radiotherapy, which is able to treat hard to reach cancers, lowering the risk of damaging surrounding tissue and the associated side effects.
Currently, around 140 patients each year receive this treatment abroad at a cost to the NHS of around £114,000 each.
According to experts, the new clinic at the Rutherford Cancer Centre in Newport, Wales, could half that cost, at the same time allowing patients to remain close to their families while undergoing the treatment.
The chief executive of Proton Partners International (PPI) Mike Moran said this was the “most strategic health project in this country in decades.
“It’s significant for the people of Wales to have high-energy proton beam therapy available”.
The NHS in England is currently installing two similar centres, located at established hospitals in Manchester and London. PPI is building a further three private proton beam centres in Liverpool, Reading and Northumberland.
