Volunteers sought for trial to see if Vitamin D can offer protection against Covid
Researchers are seeking volunteers to take part in a trial to test whether taking vitamin D can give the immune system a boost against Covid.
A deficiency in vitamin D is more common amongst older people, in black and Asian people and in people who are overweight – all of the groups who are at an increased risk of becoming severely ill with Covid.
The trial, which is being led by scientists from Queen Mary University of London and funded by Barts Charity, will use increased doses of the vitamin than those which are offered by regular supplements.
David Jolliffe, principal investigator of the study, said the trial “has the potential to give a definitive answer” to the question of whether the vitamin offers protection against Covid.
He went on to say “Vitamin D supplements are low in cost, low in risk and widely accessible; if proven effective, they could significantly aid in our global fight against the virus.”
Although taking vitamin D supplements is very safe, taking more than the recommended dose every day can be dangerous long term.
