Warning that NHS crisis ‘will leave six million people on operation waiting lists’
A new forecast from a collection of private health firms has warned that six million people will be left waiting for critical operations such as cataract surgery and hip and knee replacements by 2024 due to the NHS being unable to cope with increasing demand.
The forecast by the Independent Healthcare Providers Network also warned that the number of people on waiting lists for planned treatment in England would increase from the current 4.6 million by 30 per cent.
David Hare, chief executive of the group, said that as waiting lists expand, the proportion of people forced to incur waits of longer than the benchmark 18 weeks would more than double to 19 per cent.
He also said that lists for elective surgery would rise as increasing numbers of seriously ill patients take up beds on general wards when they are moved from overburdened A&E departments.
At the same time, demand for surgical procedures will grow as the population gets older.
However, a spokesperson from the NHS has said “As we get more funding and are able to increase beds and nurses, waiting lists will come down.”
