Warnings over pressure of hospital patient numbers
Figures released by NHS England have shown that alerts have been issued by a third of England’s hospital trusts pleading for urgent action to be taken to help with the pressure of patient numbers. Seven of the 50 trusts involved warned that they were unable to provide comprehensive care to patients and that they ran a higher risk of compromising patients’ safety.
The president of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, Dr Taj Hassan, warned that patients at the affected hospitals could be faced with delays in the administration of antibiotics and pain relief. He has also suggested emergency social care funding to assist in moving patients out of hospital after treatment.
A spokesperson for NHS England said “NHS tried-and-tested plans are currently managing the ongoing pressures of this winter.
“Going into the new year, the public can play their part by avoiding going to A&E unless it is an emergency and using local pharmacies and NHS 111 for medical advice.”
