Waste crime rising in the UK
Recent research which has now been released has indicated that 56% of UK companies do not comply with their obligations in respect of the waste that they produce. The statistics released reveal that those companies with fewer than 250 staff seem likely to be the worst offenders. Of the 56% of UK companies not complying, 94% have fewer than 250 staff.
The Environment Agency has recently stated
“Sadly, waste crime is still a big problem in England. Illegally deposited waste is unsightly, environmentally destructive, and is expensive to clean up, but it is only the visual tip of a larger iceberg of waste crime where criminals are getting rich on exploiting widespread ignorance of the law”.
The Environment Agency is still taking action against those who commit environmental crimes, for example, Wilkos Waste Management Limited was fined for a second time after breaching their environmental permit, which resulted in a fine of £12,000 for the Company and £1,920 for an individual director. This is in addition to £4,721 in costs and a £32 victim surcharge.
