West Yorkshire Speed Cameras – Police Make Changes to Their Camera Use
We all know that speed cameras have been in use on our roads for many years now, however the police have now decided to add an element of surprise to West Yorkshire speed cameras.
This week, the West Yorkshire Police force have confirmed that there will no longer be warning signs to warn drivers that a speed camera is in operation.
They now have a sign stating ‘Expect the unexpected’ as ‘a warning is not required, we won’t always use signs to tell you where a speed camera is placed.’
There are two major changes:
- Sites of concern – Cameras will be placed at ‘sites of concern’, cameras will be placed at ‘high risk’ sites. These could include places with a history of fatal collisions which have resulted in serious injury, often referred to as ‘black spot’ areas. Cameras will also be used at ‘community concern sites’ where there is clear evidence of excessive speed making the risk factor higher. The police are trying to take a proactive approach to speeding, they’re trying to prevent a fatality or serious injury in the first instance.
- Warning signs of cameras ahead – At the moment, motorists will see a sign to give an indication that they are approaching a speed camera or van with enforcement cameras. This will now change and there will be no signs to give a warning, leaving an element of surprise.
