Penalty Points and Fine to Double for Use of Mobile Phone Whilst Driving

Changes to legislation are expected to be implemented in the first half of 2017 which will see drivers who are caught using their mobile phone behind the wheel receiving six points on their licence and a £200 on the spot fine. Currently, drivers who use their mobile phones are subject to three penalty points and a £100 fine.

For drivers who are within the first two years of passing their driving test, being caught using their mobile phone will see them losing their licence and being made to re-take their driving test.

More experienced drivers who are caught more than once will automatically be required to appear in caught and face a £1,000 fine and a minimum six month driving disqualification.

A survey carried out by the RAC last week showed that, of the 1,714 motorists surveyed, almost a third admitted to using their mobile phone behind the wheel, whether that be making a phone call, sending a text message or even using apps while at the wheel. 14% of those surveyed even admitted to taking photos or filming videos whilst driving.

The new sanctions will be imposed alongside a new Government ‘Think!’ campaign with the aim to deter more drivers from using their mobile phone at the wheel and to encourage drivers to take the offence seriously.
