Shropshire maternity scandal – ‘hundreds more cases’

Over 200 new families have come forward in relation to an inquiry into mother and baby deaths at a hospital trust in Shropshire.

Over 600 cases are already being investigated where newborns and mothers were left injuried or died while under the care of Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust.

One expert has said that the scandal, which spans decades, may be the tip of the iceberg, adding that it suggests failure may be more widespread throughout the NHS.

The possible new cases follows the leak of an interim report last week, compiled by maternity expert Donna Ockenden for NHS Improvement, in which a catalogue of maternity failings in the last 40 years led to the avoidable deaths of babies and mothers at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust.

Donna Ockenden, chair of the independent review, said “I would like to thank the brave families who have come forward and shared their experiences – my team are now contacting families on a daily basis. If families would like to raise a concern, I am asking them to please get in touch.”
